Park Wildflowers from Quiet Walkways

According to the Park's Natural HistoryYellow Trillium Association, the quiet walkways were designed to entice visitors from their vehicles and into the best thing the Smokies has to offer: the beautiful and peaceful forest. The quiet walkway trails are clearly marked from roadways, where parking is limited to ensure seclusion. The walkways sometimes connect to hiking trails, loop back to the point where you entered, or you can walk as you like and turn around.

Appalachian Trail From late April through May, the two-mile section between Newfound Gap (where Tennessee and North Carolina border each other on Newfound Gap Road) and Indian Gap has good flowers. Park at the Newfound Gap parking area and cross the road to the Appalachian Trail sign.

Cove Hardwood Self-guided Nature Trail This 3/4-mile loop trail has some of the best spring wildflower viewing in the Park. Begin at the Chimneys Picnic Area, 4.4 miles south of Sugarlands Visitor Center on the Newfound Gap Road (Highway 441).

Deep Creek Trail This walk begins at the end of the Deep Creek Road, 1/2 mileTom Branch Falls beyond the Deep Creek campground turnoff. The Deep Creek area is located north of Bryson City (from the Park, drive through Cherokee, and follow the signs to and through downtown Bryson). You can see both Indian Creek and Tom Branch falls by walking about two miles roundtrip on this route.

Oconaluftee River Trail This easy, three mile roundtrip, riverside walk begins at Oconaluftee Visitor Center located two miles north of Cherokee, NC on Highway 441.

Porters Creek Trail This trail often has spectacular wildflowers from late March through April. The trailhead is located in the Greenbrier area (follow Highway 321 about six miles east of Gatlinburg). The first mile of trail offers good wildflower viewing.
