n 1996, Southern Living magazine's Readers' Choice Awards ranked
Pigeon Forge as the number-one shopping spot in the South. Besides
being a shopper's paradise, Pigeon Forge is also a gateway to
the diverse outdoor recreational opportunities to be within
the 800 square miles of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Opportunities for hiking, backpacking, camping, and whitewater
rafting abound.
Originally called Fanshiers after one of the early settlers
in the area, Richard Fanshiers, the town was later renamed "Pigeon"
from the river and "Forge" from the iron works in
the Old Mill on the river. The Old Mill (on the National Register
of Historic Sites) hints at the community that once thrived
here beside the Pigeon River. The peaks of the Great Smoky Mountains
serve as a backdrop to this action packed, fast paced town.
Activities for the young and the young at heart abound: shopping
malls, arcades, bumper cars, helicopter rides, miniature golf,
and live entertainment.
