"The Sowers"
20 1/4" x 26 3/4" Watercolor

Turn of the century Appalachian life is brought back to life in "The Sowers," a painting by Smoky Mountain artist Ken Schulz. "The Sowers" is a picturesque
look into Smoky Mountain years gone by - brought to life in this watercolor dry-brush painting
of two women planting seed while tilling ground in a mountain clearing. As they work side by side, each
with a long handled hoe, they prepare the earth before them, dropping
seeds carried in a pouch at their side. The sun's warmth can be felt, as
evident by the deep shadows cast and their poke bonnets.
The pioneer spirit of wresting a living from the earth and homesteading by primitive means
is brought to life by such wonderous brushstrokes.
The Ken Schulz Gallery was located amongst the Smoky Mountains, set to a background of trees, mountain laurel, flowering rhododendron, and dogwood. However, Ken has since departed this life and so we keep this art in his memory.
