"Returning"The magnificent Great Blue Herons are nesting again this year on an island in the Tennessee River across from the home and studio of Jim Gray. As many as thirty-five nesting pairs are now seen regularly in the spring and summer with two or three newborns each eagerly raising their open mouths to the adult birds that return with food. That these birds are successfully "Returning" is a great sign for us all, in that our raised environmental consciousness has led to reductions in the toxins which so threatened many of our great birds. Being able to watch the Herons up close as they fly by, and in the nest through his telescope, Jim has developed a deep appreciation for their grace in flight, their skill as fishers, and their extraordinary beauty. |
